Find out more about executive functions

What are executive functions?

Our executive function skills enable us to keep track of time, stay on task, remember instructions, control our impulses and think flexibly when plans change. Essentially, our executive function skills control all of our thoughts, actions, behaviour and emotions!

Whilst our executive function skills develop during childhood and peak in our mid-twenties, they still need conscious and consistent work to be improved and maintained at all stages of life.

How do we know about them?

Neuroscientists are learning more and more about how the brain works.  Recent research has clearly shown that executive functions are responsible for many of traits we associate with ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia and other neuro-developmental conditions. Contributing towards ongoing research

The ESQ-R is a self-report assessment instrument that students complete to help them (and their teachers) understand their executive skill strengths and challenges. It is a modified version of the ESQ developed by Dr Peg Dawson and Dr Richard Guare and described in a number of their books on executive skills (e.g., Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents, Smart but Scattered, Smart but Scattered Teens).

Responses to the questionnaire are entirely voluntary and may be used anonymously in ongoing research by Connections in Mind, as well as Dr Peg Dawson and Dr Julia Strait and their professional colleagues at the University of Houston, USA.

Your profile will be uniquely generated and emailed to the email address you provide.

This could be the start of your ‘lightbulb moment’ that opens you up to the world of support available for executive functioning success!
